Miami Heat: Three Straight Trips to The NBA Finals
If you’re like me (born in the 80’s) you’re quite accustomed to teams making multiple trips to the finals, however, making it to The Finals three straight seasons is really not all that common.
Of course, Michael and Scottie made it look so easy for almost a decade, but the fact is, that it’s not. In fact when it comes to teams making it four straight years to The Finals, there are three teams that have EVER done that. The Celtics from 1957-1966 made the finals for 10 straight years and won 9 titles. The Lakers between 82-85 made The Finals four straight seasons and got 2 titles, and the Celtics 84-87 made The Finals four straight seasons and got 2 titles. That’s it! No other teams have ever made The Finals 4 straight seasons.
There are 10 teams (Now including the Heat) that have made the finals exactly 3 years in a row. Only three of those teams won 3 titles. Four of those teams won two titles and two of those teams didn’t win a title.
After an 82 game season, it takes 16 wins to get a title. So you’re talking about a minimum of 98 games, and let’s face it, nobody ever really sweeps all the way through.
This is where it gets difficult for these guys. We’re talking about playing basketball on the highest possible level for about 1/3 of the year. How many people have the genetics to pull that off for four straight years? Clearly, not many.
Can the Heat make it back to the Finals again next year, when they may have to go through the Pacers, Bulls (with Rose), Celtics (with Rondo), The Nets, The Knicks… Is the Eastern Conference still the weaker conference? I’m not sure about that anymore.
